Weaving handicrafts is a very significant cottage industry in central and western Bhutan. The handicraft business is divided in to the 3 informal parts like - production, sales and employment. Since 1980, there is a regular effort of colour and design improvement in weaving handicrafts are being done by the Central Government.

Since after 1980, the central government is doing the regular effort to make privatisation of the handicraft industry of Bhutan. Many handicraft centres of the bhutan has been associated with the women associations. The culture department of Bhutan is also organising the efforts to encourage the competition between the craftsmen to innovate new designs.

The complete handicraft scenario of the Bhutan is totally dependent on the following products like - baskets, jewelry, cups and bowls, clay material. The introduction of credit cards have been introduced in the Bhutan and the increasing of the tourism industry is also helpful in making the selling of the handicraft products. The consumption rate is also high on the domestic level.

Problems in handicraft sector of Bhutan -

• high labour cost

• uncompetitive quality of export

• production, sales and furniture export data is insufficient and unreliable

• people are still unaware of the concept of the copyright laws

• efforts are still to be done to save the creativity of the artists

Bhutan Government is working a concerted effort to increase the role of creative industries like handicrafts. There is also the effort done in 2007-09 on to the promotion of the culture based creative industry to improve the socio-economic development and remove the poverty level of the country.

The Indian Handicrafts are always being appreciated by the well developed countries. The handicraft industry has been employable to more than 3 billion artisans. There are still the possibilities of growth in this sector. Approximately people are associated to rural areas to this sector.  

India is covered with 20% area of forest and it shows the wide variety of natural resources to the making and manufacturing of the wooden handicraft products. Mostly the northern, central and western part of India is still counted as the most green areas of the country. There are the facilities of permits and licenses which are issued from the Government and forest departments.

In most of the Indian parts, there is a shortage of the timber wood due to deforestation. There is approximately a new trend, where today more than 30% artisans use the pre-claimed wood and sometimes the wood to be used for making railway tracks is also used to handicrafts.

There are many local depots, agents and contractors which are engaged in selling the woods at the most high rates or by taking the advanced payments. So sometimes artisans purchase wood at the cheapest rates from the local vendors and depots.

There are many handicraft items available which are famous in making the handicraft items like - toys, Almirah, Bed Cabinets, Bon Fitted, book Rack, Candle Lamps, Chairs & Benches, Chest Of Drawers etc.

The blue pottery art is well known as originated from the Persia and Egypt but today it is becoming the patronage of Jaipur. Jaipur has been the hometown of skilled craftsmen since the inception of its time by Sawai Jai singh.  It has been practising in India since last 100 years. It is time consuming and it is labour intensive as well.

The reason of adopting the blue pottery making is that the artisans had the agricultural land also but the agriculture could be possible in the rainy season only and the second source of income was nothing. So as a second source of income, some artisans adopted the blue pottery making art.

Blue pottery is well renowned because of the use of blue dye especially in making pottery,toys and other items. By practising this art, approximately 300-400 people in Jaipur are earning their living. Many of the people are living this art and skill because of the low income condition. There were almost 50 units established in Jaipur for blue pottery and people are closing most of them.

There are many reasons for the downfall of the blue pottery sector -

• time consuming

• low market segment

• losing the sector because of low income

• Use of traditional methods

• Very labour intensive

• low marketing and distribution channels

• No branding

• low educational level of artisans

• total dependency on local traders and distributors for supply

• Role of Lead in raw material

• High competition level from other ceramic products
